Crafting Golden Legacies, Beyond Finance

19 de sept de 2023

Ancient Cubans have an inspirational saying, “When the sun rises, it rises for everyone.” This saying has inspired millions throughout the globe, and it carries deep truths about equitable opportunities for everyone. At Sun Valley Investments (SVI), we share this reasoning with our mission extending beyond just profit margins. Being stewards of the resources at our disposal, be they financial, mineral, or human, we view Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices as more than mere checkboxes to achieve legal requirements. They align our pursuits not just with profits but with a purpose.

At SVI, we are proud of the work of our teams, their financial experience, the ability to identify and explore new opportunities, and the world-class expertise in the different stages of the mining industry. But the financial power and human talent bring with them a non-written responsibility to ensure a lasting and positive impact as a result of our investment decisions.

This responsibility has a direct and known translation on the impact on the environment, particularly given the footprint of the mining industry. At SVI, we deploy our knowledge and resources to adopt the best practices available, aiming higher than the mere completion of legal requirements. From extraction to industrial processes and logistics, we believe that by reducing pollution and our carbon footprint, we are not only doing the right thing for the environment but also adopting policies that make financial sense in the long term.

Another facet of the impact of our operations is in the communities neighboring our mining and industrial sites. As we explore natural resources, it is imperative we invest in the very communities these resources come from. Hence the reason we started funding an educational initiative that brought the Japanese Kumon learning methodology to the children of Santa Isabel, in Antioquia, Colombia.

Initiatives like the one we are funding in Santa Isabel take time to show their results. A reason for us to found the Fundación Solidária Mina Quintana, in Colombia, is to manage programs like this and help magnify their impact, ensuring a lasting positive legacy in the communities.

Sound governance practices are required to ensure the longevity and consistency of these policies. For these, we rely mostly on our management team, boasting decades of leadership at global mining front-runners. This wide experience in different and highly demanding environments sharpens our senses to adopt best practices for our businesses. Be it on a public company in North America, on a mining operation in South America, or a gold intermediary in Europe, we aim for the highest standards of governance. At SVI we draw inspiration from the best practices in the industry and across geographies, to implement sound and clear policies, ethical decision-making, and build accountability to all of our stakeholders.

We aim for our ESG practices to become stars of their own in the constellation that is SVI, alongside our best-performing investments. Ensuring that, with our decisions and investments, we have brought a positive, long-term impact to the communities and ecosystems we are present in. Or, as ancient Cubans would put it, that we have helped deliver a brighter sun to shine in the morning to come.
